The Centre for Impact Assessment Research and Training (CIART) welcomes you to its official home page.
CIART is an independent, non-profit making organisation based in the Department of Geography, University of Otago, Dunedin, New Zealand.
The purpose of the Centre is to support and promote improvement in the practice of impact assessment in New Zealand and the wider Asia-Pacific region, through a variety of activities. We work in most types of impact assessment, including the "assessment of environmental effects" (AEE) under the Resource Management Act, plus social. cultural, health and ecological impact assessmen, and strategic environmental assessment.
On this site you will find information about our current research and publications, and the other services we provide for the impact assessment community. To find out about CIART's members, click on People
Overview
As the name suggests, we see an important role for research into the current implementation and operation of impact assessment procedures, with the aim of identifying problems that might be constraining the effectiveness of IA in practice. Information on current and past projects can be found by clicking on the Research button. Publications information is also available.
Training is also fundamental to good practices, and this is true for consultants, staff in the authorities administering impact assessment processes, staff in NGOs, or members of public interest groups. The Centre aims to provide training, tailored to the needs of specific groups, in the principles and practice of impact assessment of all forms, public involvement methods, approaches for reviewing assessments, and so forth.
Other services we provide include: an independent source of advice on impact assessment issues; independent reviewing of AEEs, impact assessments, reports, etc.; locating information, reports and literature on impact assessment. See Services for more information.
CIART normally provides its training, reviewing and advisory services on a contractual basis. The Centre initiates research projects if funding sources allow, but will also undertake contract research.
